SUN (Symbolic Universal Notation) is a pictorial language created to provide Scripture to the Deaf and Deafblind with little access to education who have not yet learned how to read or use their national sign language. It is made up of one hundred core symbols that are the building blocks for the rest of the language. Using a symbolic system of writing, they are able to read God's Word for themselves.
Our in-country partners often are agencies that serve Deaf and DeafBlind and churches with ongoing ministries supporting the local Deaf community. If you are one of these, please reach out to us. We also get contacted by parents of children who need SUN to develop literacy skills. Our focus is on training new partners, but we can get you connected to people in your country who may already be trained in SUN and your national sign language.
If you have literacy experience with Deaf and/or DeafBlind persons (sign language required), or have taught Braille, our edit and teaching team needs you. There is a great gulf between the absence of one (no hearing) or both (limited hearing and/or vision in combination) sensory systems. We need experienced teachers who understand how to reach people who have grown up missing abstract thinking ...patterns due to lack of exposure to the world. Persons with a desire to teach the Deaf and Deafblind will be highly flexible and nimble in their teaching methods. We are developing materials to help you do this well.
For people groups around the world to be able to teach the SUN Bible to the Deaf in their communities, they need training materials in their native language.
We are seeking native or bilingual speakers of other languages who can translate our English SUN training documents in their native language. These training materials will be used by the teachers of the Deaf and Deafblind in other countries. ...Basic computer skills and language fluency in both English and their native tongue are needed. This work is entirely remote and will only require ten to twelve hours of service per week. The training manual is twenty-six pages long, and we are hoping for someone to serve with us until the job is complete, which may take a few months. Using your language skills, you can help bring the Gospel to the Deaf and Deafblind around the world.
It consists of a small group of universally recognized characters that are then combined or altered to make additional symbols which are called extensions. Between the characters and extensions, all of Scripture can be represented.
The symbols in SUN are taught using illustrations to improve retention. The example on the left shows that the symbol for "Person" and "Write" makes up the symbol for "Author, writer, or scribe."
